UK Power Networks is the first Distribution System Operator to publish data on curtailment and capacity across its network.

The company offers flexible connections, which allow renewable generators to connect swiftly to the network, however customers may sometimes see their exported energy curtailed in order for the UK network to remain balanced.

By opening up access to this data through their Open Data Portal, UK Power Networks hope that prospective generators will be better informed as to which areas and Grid Supply Points have, or require, the most capacity.  This should reduce the curtailment of future projects, and allow more renewable energy to reach those who can benefit from it.

The issue of curtailment highlights the need for adequate storage solutions to support Net Zero. Whilst better data should will no doubt boost the efficiency of projects, it is critical that any surplus energy – especially that which is generated from renewable sources – can be stored effectively, in order for it to be released at times when the grid would have to otherwise rely on non-renewable generation.
