Despite concerns about delays and budget overruns in existing projects, the Civil Nuclear Roadmap outlines the exploration of a new site for a nuclear power station comparable to those at Hinkley Point and Sizewell. £300 million is allocated to produce nuclear reactor fuel domestically, currently sourced from Russia.
Critics highlight past project challenges, while the government emphasizes job creation, energy security, and reducing reliance on global markets, particularly Russia. Consultations will focus on new approaches to site selection and encouraging private investment. The move is part of efforts to diversify energy sources, as nuclear presently provides around 15% of the UK’s electricity.
