New ‘Viking Link’ Interconnector now Operational

The Viking Link electricity interconnector is now live, facilitating the exchange of power between the UK and Denmark.

The project – a joint venture between National Grid and Danish operator Energinet – cost £1.7 billion to complete, and uses a 475 mile cable to link the Bicker Fen substation in Lincolnshire with the Revsing substation in Denmark.

The interconnector will have an initial capacity of 800 MW, increasing up to a maximum capacity of 1.4GW, enough to transport electricity for up to 2.5 million UK homes and save approximately 600,000 tonnes of carbon emissions.
