What is P432, and why is it needed?

Introduced by Elexon, the P432 regulation will take effect from April 2024, and follow P272 (which took effect in 2017) as the next phase of the Market-wide Half Hourly Settlement (MHHS) programme.

The aim of the MHHS programme is to implement the Half Hourly settlement process across as many supply points as possible.  This includes small consumers, such as households and smaller businesses, who have traditionally used Non Half Hourly meters that are read manually and often billed through estimates.

By increasing the number of supply points which use Half Hourly settlements (via smart meters and data loggers), the UK electricity network can operate more efficiently.  The data obtained will allow electricity suppliers and network operators to charge and settle accounts more accurately, and to better manage supply and demand of the grid.

With the continued growth of renewable generation and the electric vehicle market, the need for a more flexible, responsive, and transparent electricity market is greater than ever.

So, what will P432 do specifically?

P432 is a modification that that will ensure that all Current Transformer (CT) Advanced meters are settled on a Half Hourly basis.  This will apply immediately to all new connections, whilst any existing Non-Half Hourly CT meters will need to complete the change to Half Hourly settlements by March 2026.

Each meter setup can be different, and information is not always readily available.  Therefore – with an estimated 50,000 meters that might require upgrading – those who are affected should take action as soon as possible.

How do I know if I am affected by P432?

You may not be aware if your meter is a NHH CT Advanced meter, or whether you need to take any action to comply with P432.  The Meter Operator should be able to tell you if your meter is NHH CT, and if a meter exchange is required.  Many supplies can be upgraded remotely to Half Hourly settlements, meaning that the process might not require any physical disruption to your supply.

If you aren’t sure who your Meter Operator is, or if you have meters which are non AMR (manually read, with no consumption data being collected) then get in touch with us today at info@lcutility.co.uk
